<abstract>
Introduction: Global concerns about climate change and sustainable development have intensified the search for pathways that reconcile economic growth with human well-being. In this context, the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) stand at the forefront of global sustainability challenges. This study therefore investigated the relationship between carbon emission intensity, energy consumption, electrification, and quality of life from 2000 to 2020.
Methods: The study employed a novel non-parametric Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) to explore heterogeneous effects across the life expectancy distribution. The Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) method and the Dumitrescu–Hurlin panel causality tests were used for robustness checks.
Results: The analysis reveals that higher carbon intensity consistently undermines the quality of life, with its detrimental effects being 2.4 times higher in lower life expectancy quantiles. Energy consumption enhances quality of life, particularly in areas with lower health baselines, peaking at a gain of +0.09 years of life expectancy. However, its benefits taper off and may even reverse at higher levels of life expectancy. Electrification exhibits a strongly positive and rising effect, ranging from negligible at the lowest quantiles to an increase of +0.45 years in life expectancy at higher quantiles.
Conclusion: This study concludes that carbon emission intensity consistently reduces quality of life across the BRICS economies, while energy consumption yields diminishing and potentially adverse health impacts over time. However, electrification increasingly enhances quality of life. The study urges policymakers to move beyond uniform climate targets and adopt quantilespecific decarbonization strategies.
</abstract>
